CAT Math Questions

CAT Math Questions:

1. A group workers can complete a certain job in 9 days. But it so happens that every alternate day starting from the second day, 2 workers are withdraw from the job and every alternate day starting from the third day, one worker is added to the group. If it takes 17 days to finish the job now, find the number of workers who started the job?

a. 5

b. 10

c. 15

d. 20

2. How many numbers greater than 0 and less than a million can be formed with the digits of 0, 7 and 8?

a. 486

b. 1,084

c. 728

d. None of these

    Solution
    amount of work done on first day = 1/9
    amount of work done on day 2 = 1/9 – 2/(9n)
    amount of work done on day 3 = 1/9 – 1/(9n)
    amount of work done on day 4 = 1/9 – 3/(9n)
    amount of work done on day 5 = 1/9 – 2/(9n)

    SO adding all sud give 1
    1 = 1/9 + (2/9- 3/9n) + (2/9 -5/9n) + …. 17 terms
    1= 17/9 – 4( 6/9n + 7*2/9n)
    8/9 = (4/9n)*(20)
    8n = 80
    n = 10

    SO answer is 10 i.e. option (b)
