Directions for next 2 quantitative ability questions:
1. In a locality, 2/3 of the people have cable-TV, 1/5 have VCR, and 1/10 have both, what is the fraction of people having either cable TV or VCR, But not both?
a)19/30
b) 3/5
c) 17/30
d) 2/3
e) 23/30
2. Sapta bought 5 pens, 7 pencils and 4 erasers. Rajan bought 6 pens, 8 erasers and 14 pencils for an amount which was half more than what Sapta had paid. What percent of the total amount paid by Sapta was paid for the pens?
a) 37.5%
b) 62.5%
c) 50%
d) 43%
e) None of these

5pens+7pencils+4erasers=x(say)
6pens+14pencils+8erasers=3x/2(since half more than what Sapta had paid)
2*(eq(1))-(eq(2)) gives 4pens=x/2
implies 5pens=5x/8
implies 62.5% of amount sapta has paid.

aaaaahhhh!!! i didn’t read the question properly…It was so simple…I read it 8 pencil and 14 erasers….I spent so much of time…!
By the way,Sri are you writing CAT this year?

hmmm..
See i’m also working for three years..And writing on 5th with half baked prepartion…Actually i’m aiming some part time MBA from any good institute …CAT is probably not my cup of tea..!!
Moreover, since i’m married it would be difficult for me to quit unless the percentile the percentile is very high which i don’t think would happen.
My main problem is i lack temprament and get scared of LR..And i haven’t taken MOCK too..
anyways that’s my part, what abt you? you work for which company and where? Good luck to you dude..

1) Required answer=P(A)+P(B)-2P(A and B)
=2/3+1/5-2*1/10
=2/3
= Ans (D)
2) Say 5x+7y+4z= m ———–(1)
then 6x+14y+8z=3m/2————(2)
(1)*2-(2)
4x=m/2
> 5x=5m/8
so required answer=100*m/(5m/8)%
=62.5%
