Tips on Solving DATA INTERPRETATION Problems

August 14th, 2009 | 7 Comments | Posted in Data Interpretation

Tips on Solving DATA INTERPRETATION Problems:

Data may be represented in a number of complex forms, and hence solving Data Interpretation problems becomes far more difficult. There is no fixed format for solving such problems, and each has to be tackled in its own distinct way. Thus, to answer such questions correctly, it is essential to practice all types of Data Interpretation exercises a number of times, so as to be familiar with all the data presentation types. Yet, there are some primary guidelines that can always be followed:

a) Read the data very carefully, as the smallest detail may change the meaning of the question completely. Similarly, the instructions have to be understood carefully to prevent wasting time in calculating data that is not required, and also to find out exactly what is the answer that is sought.

b) Try to understand the data provided carefully, before jumping to answer the questions. The questions are designed to be deceptive, and proper understanding of the requirements is a must. If the Data Interpretation is of the Combined variety or if there are more than one data table/charts/graphs, try to understand the relation between the given tables. For Example, one table may talk about absolute sales figures, while the other table may talk of sales as a percentage of production. Hence, any question on excess production or Goods in stock, will require data from both tables.

c) Be very careful of the units used in the tables, and the units in which the answers (options) are provided. A mistake in the units may yield an entirely different answer. Also be careful of whether the answer is required in decimal or percentage. Such errors are common and easily avoidable.

Online CAT 2009 – Decoded

June 12th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in MBA Exams Information, Useful Links

The nationwide admission examination for management institutes and the most coveted IIMs, Common Admission Test (CAT) is undergoing a major change in its format. The Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) have decided to change their 33 year old saga of pen – paper examination format with a computer based examination. This has resulted in a kind of phobia in the mind of the aspirants. It is expected that about 3 lakh candidates will appear for CAT 2009. The change in the format has left the candidates wondering what CAT 2009 will be like.

The management experts have a different say. They believe that the aspirants should stop worrying and start studying. It has been confirmed by IIM Calcutta director, Mr. Sekhar Chaudhuri that this time in CAT 2009 the candidates will have to reach their respective CAT center and take the test by looking at the questions on a computer screen and then key the answers into the terminal. Sources also reveal that the test will not be computer adaptive. In a computer adaptive test the computer adapts to the examinee’s performance and changes difficulty level of the next question. In CAT 2009 the candidate can look into the entire question paper on the computer screen and then begin answering any question they like. The examinees will not have to be connected to the internet for appearing the test.

There are many hidden advantages of this format. The candidates can select a day from the ten day frame. This has an added advantage in the suburbs where the CAT was difficult to conduct earlier. The foremost advantage of using this format is to reduce the human intervention in the examination. This would minimize errors and would make the system fast and accurate. It would reduce the participation of faculties of IIMs into the mechanical process of paper checking which facilitates their involvement in research work.

The disadvantage lies in the fact that people who are unfamiliar to computer terminal may find the test difficult.

The aspirants are advised to get used to computer interface. Reading a lot on computer terminal will help. Taking computer based examination provided by coaching centers like www.fireup.co.in, which provides online facilities, will help. Students must note down that with the change in technologies occurring worldwide there will changes in the examination also but the fundamentals always remain the same. So before anything get your basics reviewed and then take as many online tests as possible.

Lateral Thinking Explained

March 26th, 2009 | 2 Comments | Posted in CAT Tips and Tricks

Lateral Thinking is a powerful method to use the unused potential of brain. This is originally propounded by Edward De Bono.  In this post various simple methods which can bring about lateral thinking capabilities in a reader are described.

Lateral Thinking Methods or Skills-

There are a number of mental tools or methods that can be used to bring about lateral thinking. These include the following-

Random Entry: Choose an object at random, and associate that with the area you are thinking about. This is also called the method of focal objects.

For example imagine you are thinking about how to improve fireup.co.in. Choose an object at random from your room, you might see a spectacle. Spectacle helps to see things clearly. Perhaps this makes you think of embedding sound software that would readout the concepts and other website materials which would be a great help for visually impaired students.

Provocation: Provocation provokes us to look at things not as they are but as what they might be. We must change our perception in order to change directions and seek alternative solutions and questions what if, suppose what would happen, etc.. Make an idea that may not be direct solution to the problem but which moves thinking forward to a new place from where new ideas or solutions may be found.

Challenge: Simply challenge the way things have always been done or seen, or the way they are. This is done not to show there is anything wrong with the existing situation but simply to direct your perceptions to exploring outside the current area.

For example you could challenge coffee cups being produced with a handle. There is nothing wrong with coffee cups having handles so the challenge is a direction to explore without defending the status quo. The reason for the handle seems to be that the cup is often too hot to hold directly. Perhaps coffee cups could be made with insulated finger grips, or there could be separate coffee cup holders similar to beer holders.

Solve some real life problems by applying lateral thinking

Real life examples of lateral thinking

A graduate had been trying to get into IT Sector, but without success and had exhausted all the normal routes. As a last resort, he had 100 CVs printed. He then went round the “Sector V”, where all the main IT companies in Kolkata are located and proceeded to place one of these CVs under the windscreen of every Honda City and top of the range BMW and Mercedes he came across.

What happened next day? Yes! You guessed it right. Next day, he had several phone calls offering him interviews from the senior executives whom the cars belonged to.

This question was asked to a candidate in a top MNC to elicit his true perception

Q – A man and his son are in a car crash. The man is killed and the son is taken to hospital gravely injured. When he gets there, the surgeon says “I can’t operate on this boy- he is my son!” How is this possible? [Surgeon is telling the truth, the boy don't have two fathers and he has no look alike]

This is an example of a quick assumption blocking the mind’s ability to explore alternatives. In this case the assumption is that the quintessential doctor is a male. If a candidate change his perception to allow for a female surgeon, then the answer is suddenly obvious, the surgeon is the boy’s mother.
