IIMs use biometrics to prevent CAT applicants from cheating

Find below a special report by Business Standard;  Source Link : Here

CAT 2009 will be conducted between November 28 and December 7

To avoid a repeat of the Common Admission Test (CAT) paper leak in 2003, the Indian Institutes of Management(IIMs), which conduct the exam usually, spend a tense few months to ensure there are no leaks and glitches. This time around, aided by technology and a professional examination conducting company, the IIMs are confident there will be no security breaches.
Prometric, the company that bagged the contract to conduct the computer-based examination this year has a security mechanism in place which will help the IIMs manage over 2 lakh applications received this year. Also being introduced is capturing of biometric information which will ensure that no fradulent motives like writing the exam twice or using a proxy candidate can be used.
It is learnt that despite the instructions given to students in the CAT bulletin, nearly 1,000 applications every year get rejected by the IIMs due to discrepancies in the forms of which a few of them are suspected to be deliberate.
“Till last year, there were cases where the photographs would not match or candidates would not attach their photographs while applying for hall ticket. Since there were chances of somebody else appearing as proxy for these candidates, the institute used to reject such cases. On an average, the institute used to come across 100-200 such cases involving photographs,” said a source.
Similarly, incomplete forms and those with different names also used to get rejected. “Some candidates used to register on CAT Bulletin by a different name and would later apply for hall ticket with a different name. However, the institute was alert enough to identify such inconsistencies and reject the forms. This also used to create some hue and cry among the candidates. However, the new security measures like capturing candidates’ pictures and biometric information will make it almost impossible to make any attempts of fraud,” the sourceFind  added.

Online CAT 2009 – Decoded

June 12th, 2009 | 1 Comment | Posted in MBA Exams Information

The nationwide admission examination for management institutes and the most coveted IIMs, Common Admission Test (CAT) is undergoing a major change in its format. The Indian Institute of Management (IIMs) have decided to change their 33 year old saga of pen – paper examination format with a computer based examination. This has resulted in a kind of phobia in the mind of the aspirants. It is expected that about 3 lakh candidates will appear for CAT 2009. The change in the format has left the candidates wondering what CAT 2009 will be like.

The management experts have a different say. They believe that the aspirants should stop worrying and start studying. It has been confirmed by IIM Calcutta director, Mr. Sekhar Chaudhuri that this time in CAT 2009 the candidates will have to reach their respective CAT center and take the test by looking at the questions on a computer screen and then key the answers into the terminal. Sources also reveal that the test will not be computer adaptive. In a computer adaptive test the computer adapts to the examinee’s performance and changes difficulty level of the next question. In CAT 2009 the candidate can look into the entire question paper on the computer screen and then begin answering any question they like. The examinees will not have to be connected to the internet for appearing the test.

There are many hidden advantages of this format. The candidates can select a day from the ten day frame. This has an added advantage in the suburbs where the CAT was difficult to conduct earlier. The foremost advantage of using this format is to reduce the human intervention in the examination. This would minimize errors and would make the system fast and accurate. It would reduce the participation of faculties of IIMs into the mechanical process of paper checking which facilitates their involvement in research work.

The disadvantage lies in the fact that people who are unfamiliar to computer terminal may find the test difficult.

The aspirants are advised to get used to computer interface. Reading a lot on computer terminal will help. Taking computer based examination provided by coaching centers like www.fireup.co.in, which provides online facilities, will help. Students must note down that with the change in technologies occurring worldwide there will changes in the examination also but the fundamentals always remain the same. So before anything get your basics reviewed and then take as many online tests as possible.

March 10th, 2009 | No Comments | Posted in Happening @ FireUp

India’s best management institutes Indian Institutes of Management’s Admission Group decided to make their Common Admission Test (CAT 2009) online, and an alumnus of IIM Indore geared up for the challenge with his venture www.fireup.co.in

Vineet Patawari, founder of www.fireup.co.in, a Chartered Accountant and a pass-out of the Post-Graduate Diploma in Business Management, IIM Indore, who rejected a sought after seven figure job from JPMC in 2008 to follow his heart. He is supported in this venture by his partner and creative head, Shreshtha Jha.

www.fireup.co.in, which was formally launched at Oxford book store, Kolkata, on 18th December 2008 provides all the facilities for a CAT taker under one banner and includes features like blog, videos, forum, chat, common room and knowledge management.

www.Fireup.co.in claims to train an individual right from the initial CAT preparation to the ultimate challenge of clearing group discussions and interviews thereby securing a seat in the most coveted institutions through its unique courseware and methodology.

Though www.fireup.co.in is primarily an online education venture, some of its modules are also available in CDs at leading stores.

Asked about what initiated him to start an online CAT Preparation site, Patawari said that the logistics of the admission examination was becoming a nightmare, due to the growing number of aspirants every year. It was soon becoming imperative for the exam to go online some day, he added. The online examination would be much easier to manage than the current system, Jha said.

An IIM-A source confirmed that the online examination would cut down administrative costs, involving people travelling to places, and sending papers all over the country, with risks of leaks. The conventional examination can be conducted from a limited number centers while the online tests can be taken from anywhere.
